FIELD TRIPS

FIELD TRIPS

Join us for your next interactive wilderness-based field trip

One of our favorite things at AWI is seeing children used to indoor learning step into the outdoors and experience the magic of the natural world around them! Our kids always say they had the best day ever after spending time with us, and we would love nothing more than to offer this experience to your school! Sign up today for an exceptional wilderness-based field trip!

All field trips are explicitly outlined below, or you can find them arranged here in document form.

WILDERNESS ECO-ADVENTURE

COASTAL OR INLAND

3 – 5 hours
1st GRADE & UP

This immersive program allows students to explore either
coastal ecosystems or inland wilderness while participating
in meaningful land stewardship. Students learn how land and
water systems connect, observe wildlife or plants, and
practice ecological care either on the farm and in wilderness

habitats.

Option B – A day in the life of Farm or Land

Restoration

Option A – Coastal Experience: Guided coastal
or inland hike, tidepool exploration, marine
life observation, and stewardship of coastal
habitats. Choose from the following topics:

Wildlife Tracking
Plant Medicine & Foraging
Field Art & Nature Journaling

Areas of Study: Ecosystem connections, wildlife and
plant observation, stewardship ethics, ecological

literacy

THE FOUR SEASONS: A PHENOLOGY IMMERSION

4 visits per year | 4 hours minimum per visit

1st GRADE & UP

This yearlong program invites students into a deep
relationship with land through repeated seasonal visits. Over
four visits, students observe, document, and reflect on
seasonal changes. Together, they build a phenology wheel,
tracking what is growing, flowering, migrating, and resting
across the year. Each visit includes hands-on farm work,
creating a foraged snack, wilderness exploration, and reflection.

Each visit includes:

  • Seasonal farm activity (planting, harvesting, soil
    building, or seed saving)
  • Wilderness observation adventure
  • Phenology wheel updates (visual, written, and sensory)
  • A take-home plant during select seasons

Areas of Study: Seasonal change, systems thinking,
ecological time, observation skills, land stewardship

STEWARDSHIP & FIRE MAKING

3 – 6 hours
1 GRADE & UP

Fire has long been a tool of survival, stewardship, and community.
In this hands-on program, students step into the role of young land
stewards—learning not only how to build a fire, but how to do so
ethically, safely, and with deep respect for the living landscape.
Following an adventurous hike, students will learn to observe the
land with intention—discovering which natural materials may be
gathered responsibly and which must be left behind to continue
supporting wildlife and ecosystem health. They will explore the
principles of fire ecology, resource conservation, and human responsibility.

Working together, students will:

  • Gather appropriate downed materials during a guided stewardship hike.
  • Learn how to create a tinder bundle using natural fibers.
Practice proper fire-building structure techniques (teepee, log cabin, and airflow principles).
  • Understand fire safety, containment, and extinguishing protocols.
  • Participate in lighting and tending a small educational campfire under instructor & chaperone supervision.

OPTIONAL: Bring S’MORES ingredients for a fun campfire treat.

Areas of Study: Practical wilderness skills,
confidence-building and teamwork, understanding
humanity’s historical and ecological relationship
with fire, and cultivating a strong ethic of
environmental stewardship and responsibility.

WILDLIFE TRACKING & CAMERA MONITORING

Two Field Trips Required | 3–6 hours each

3rd GRADE & UP

This immersive, research-based program transforms students into
wildlife field scientists. During their first visit, students learn
how to identify animal tracks, scat, trails, bedding areas, and
habitat features. They explore predator–prey relationships, animal
movement patterns, and ecosystem dynamics while conducting hands-on field investigations across the land.

Using their observations, students work in teams to analyze habitat
conditions and determine the most strategic location for a wildlife
camera. After presenting and defending their recommendations, the
class installs a camera at their selected site—launching a long-term monitoring project.

Students return later in the school year to reassess the site,
evaluate wildlife activity, analyze collected data, and determine
whether the camera location remains optimal or should be relocated based on new evidence.

Exclusive School Monitoring Package

This program includes an optional $600 Wildlife Monitoring Package, which provides:

  • Purchase of a dedicated wildlife camera exclusively for your
    school
  • Professional installation at your class-selected site
  • Regular camera maintenance
  • Monthly wildlife data reports sent directly to your classroom
  • Seven months of active monitoring and data collection
  • This extended research partnership allows students to engage in authentic long-term ecological study while contributing to real wildlife monitoring efforts.

Areas of Study: Wildlife Tracking, scientific
inquiry, field research, data analysis, teamwork,
and adaptive problem-solving.

STEWARDSHIP SOLUTIONS LAB:
FARM CHALLENGE PROGRAM

Two Field Trips Required | 4 – 6 hours each

MIDDLE SCHOOL & UP

This two-part, service-learning program that empowers
students to become real-world problem solvers. During
their first visit, students tour the farm, investigate
ecological and agricultural challenges, and collect field
data. Back at school, they work in teams to design
solutions through research, engineering plans, or
fundraising proposals. On their second visit, students
return to present and help implement their solutions—
contributing directly to the stewardship and future of the land.

This is a 2 Field TRIP Requirement and is best scheduled in

Fall with a follow-up being in Spring.

Areas of Study: Environmental science, engineering &
design, climate resilience, teamwork, leadership, and
service learning.

SECRET SHELTER IN THE WOODS

5 – 6 hours
HIGH SCHOOL

Adventure into the wild side of the property for a shelter-
building adventure. Prepare to hike up to 4.5 miles, learning medicinal plants while traversing over 5 ecosystems along the
way. Backpack your lunch into the wild, filter water along
the way, go to the bathroom in the wilderness, get wet while
crossing a stream, and use tools such as saws or pocket knives.

This is the most adventurous program we offer.

This adventure is for the brave…

Areas of Study: Bushcraft, engineering, ecosystems,
resilience
